The Republic of Seychelles
is made up of 115 islands offering an amazing diversity of
experiences for visitors and an ever-widening choice of spectacular
venues for an unforgettable
tropical island holiday.
As you would expect, with so many
islands comprising Seychelles, island hopping is totally seamless
with many scheduled and private internal flights, helicopter
flights and marine ferry services
available to make almost every itinerary possible. The two main
islands Mahé and Praslin have an "interesting" yet excellent local
bus net work with regular services to all corners of the islands. La
Digu has its own unique forms of transport - the Ox Cart and the
bicycle!
Only on Mahe and Praslin are roads paved. Traffic moves on the
left. |

Taxi
Taxis on Mahe and Praslin are metered with government controlled
rates. They can be found at the airports and outside the larger
hotels. In addition to point-to-point transportation most will also
provide good island tours (with rates negotiated in advance). Rates
on Praslin are 25% higher and there are surcharges for travel
between 10 PM and 6 AM. Typical rates, not including tips, are:
| Mahe Airport to Beau Vallon |
US$ 30 |
| Mahe Airport to Plantation
Club |
US$ 35 |
| Beau Vallon to Victoria |
US$ 20 |
| Plantation Club to Victoria |
US$ 40 |
| Praslin Airport to La
Reserve |
US$ 25 |
| Praslin Airport to Baie Ste
Anne Jetty |
US$ 20 |
Vehicle Rental
Rental cars (mostly Mini Mokes, jeeps and small Japanese
sedans) and small trucks are plentiful on Mahe; less so on
Praslin. In the high seasons, advance booking is almost a
necessity. Rates are typically higher than elsewhere, on the
order of US$65 and up per day and include insurance, tax and
unlimited mileage. A regular drivers license is all that's
needed. Drivers are also available for about US$200 a day.
What's a Mini Moke? Well, it was
designed in the early 1960s by Austin as an easily transportable
vehicle for the British Army, light and compact. A failure as
that, the Mini Moke has been manufactured in Enhland, Australia,
Portugal and Italy and has become a genuine cult classic.
